Short Essay Part 2: “On the historical geographies of recent politics.”
You will conduct some basic archival research to gain some insight into the historical
context of the case study you began in Part 1. You will then extend the original essay to
include this context and rework the analysis to incorporate new findings and insights.
For this assignment, “archives” has a broad definition. In essence, I am asking you to
finding some primary textual or graphic (images, maps, etc.) evidence that assists you
in analyzing your case through your chosen analytical lens. Thus, you can go and visit
an actual archival holding or you can seek digitally available images or text from
sources as diverse as newspaper or magazine back issues (be sure to know how to use
these as primary sources) and actual archival holdings’ digital collections (i.e. the
As in Part 1, the final paper should be structured as a formal academic essay – this
means providing a concise introduction, a well-structured body of the essay, and a
substantive conclusion. Thus, you will need to rework and edit your original paper as
you incorporate your findings from Part 2. Essays must be referenced through
consistent use of an accepted citation system (MLA, CMS, etc).
