General Assessment FAQ
Is there a 10% leeway in the word count?
No. The marker will stop reading your submitted work once
the maximum word limit is met.
Can I do …? Is it okay if I do… in my assignment?
Generally, it is to your discretion and critical thinking to
determine the details of your assignment. If something is
not specifically required in the assessment task information
or marking rubric, then it is not needed. Similarly, if
something does not contradict these resources and makes
intuitive sense, then you are welcome to apply it to your
What does it mean to critically evaluate the
This means to be critical of your sources. Look for and report
limitations of the research you describe, think about exceptions and
arguments against some of the points made by your references,
and be sceptical of claims that are made when there is no clear
research to support them. You do not have to critically evaluate
every source, but your marker will want to see evidence that you
have thought about your references critically. You do not need to
have a separate section for critical evaluation, it should be
integrated into different parts of the essay. The following are good
examples of critical evaluation:
1. Evaluating the currency and applicability of the source (Does
this source apply to contemporary counselling as it relates to
the specific mental health issue?).
2. Evaluating the method of studies (Is the method an
appropriate way of testing what the researchers intended?).
3. Questioning the extent of some of the claims made by authors
(Is this a reasonable claim? Or is it overstating based on the
Can you upload an HD assignment as an example?
Unfortunately, when this is done, most submitted
assignments look almost exactly the same as the example
assignment. The assessment information, criteria, and rubric
are sufficiently clear to give you enough information on how
to put the assignments together. There are many different
ways of completing the assessment tasks and we do not
want to restrict your creativity by providing examples of
It says my assignment has been marked but I cannot
see a grade?
Grades are all released at the same time unless you have
submitted your assignment late. For assignment 1, marks
are released 15 working days following submission of the
assignment. For assignment 2, grades are released 20
working days following submission of the assignment.
I accidentally submitted the file in the wrong format,
will this affect my mark?
No, just let your lecturer know and we will allow you to
submit a PDF of the same document.
I can see my letter grade, but why cannot see my
The Monash University policy indicates that a mark (out of 50) is displayed for
assessment task 1 and a letter grade (N, P, C, D, HD) for assessment task 2.
You will see your final numerical score for the unit after the end of the
semester or term.
Can you check my draft before I submit it?
No, we are not able to review drafts before submission.
Is the assignment marked anonymously?
No, your lecturer will see your name and student number
and you will see their name.
Can I reference the DSM-5 or ICD-11?
Yes, you can.
Should I put the assessment scales in the essay or in
Most scales that are published in journal articles are
copyright protected and cannot be reproduced in
assignments without written permission of the
authors/publishers. Scales that are freely accessible online
can be used without permission. A simple reference to the
scale is sufficient for the purposes of the assessment tasks.
Can I reference the readings or the primary textbook?
Yes, you may.
Do I use APA 6th or 7th?
Use APA 7th style for both assignments (But not required for
Part B Handouts of Assignment 1).
How do I find other research?
Please use the Monash library search function. You may also
log in to Google Scholar using your Monash student
username and password to access full-text research. Please
see the links on Moodle.
Do you use Turnitin?
Markers use Turnitin to check for similarities between the
submitted work and other sources.
Do I need to attach a cover sheet?
Is there a minimum number of references we need to
There is no specific number of references required.
Do I need an abstract or a title page?
What do I name the files that I upload?
Please label your file as "Assignment 1, Name, Student
Do I need to reference every sentence?
You do not need to cite at the end of each sentence. After
you have cited a source in a paragraph, you can refer to the
authors by their name(s), and/or refer to them as "the
author(s)" in the next sentence. It should be clear enough
who "the author(s)" refers to.
What is considered a recent reference?
For empirical research, it is usually best to be careful about
articles that are more than 5 years old, and just check
whether there is more recent research on the same topic. It
does not mean you cannot cite older research, because
there are many older studies that are still very relevant and
have not been superseded. For authoritative texts and
theoretical articles, it is normally fine if they are published
within the last 10 years or so, assuming there is not a more
recent edition. Use the feature "city by" in Google Scholar to
find where a source has been cited since its publication.
What is included in the word count?
Headings, main text, in-text references, tables and figures
are included. The reference list and appendices (where
applicable) are not included in the word count.
Should I submit the assignment as one or more
Please submit only one document per assessment task.
