The purpose of the application reports is to assess understanding of course concepts and for students to apply concepts to their own lives. The purpose of this specific report is to simply exercise control over your own behavior – especially those communicative behaviors that have become so routine that you forgot to manipulate (in an ethical manner) them to create a desired response.
Logistics: The report should be in its final, professional form including: 2-3 pages, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, and proofread
To accomplish the above purpose, choose a nonverbal behavior (e.g., kinesics, paralanguage, eye behavior, etc.) that can easily be manipulated. Plan an interaction with someone you know well. This might be a roommate, significant other, friend, or family member. Then, change something about your “normal” interpersonal behavior. You may either reduce or increase the amount of the chosen behavior. For example, you may choose to speak significantly faster than usual, use significantly less eye contact, interact at a closer or further distance, or orient your body away from them while interacting.
Write about your experience with this manipulation. I want to know what you did and what, if any, reaction you created. You must include:
A description of the interaction (setting, time, topic of conversation)
What happened (the selected nonverbal behavior you manipulated, verbal or nonverbal reactions from other)?
Answers to the following question: What are the advantages and the disadvantages of being able to control and manipulate your own nonverbal cues?
How would you use this information in future interactions?
Do not forget to include your own examples/experiences, the textbook/class material, and/or media examples to illustrate your points.
